Historian Tom Clemens models the uniform of the 73rd N Y Infantry, known as the Second Fire Zouaves. The Zouaves were composed of 349 officers and men, virtually all volunteer firemen from the greater New York City area. They wore their distinctive uniforms (patterned after those of the French Zouaves light-infantry corps) into battle at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. 162 Zouaves were either killed, wounded or missing when the battle ended.
