On Aug. 27, 1859, "Col." Edwin L. Drake struck oil near Titusville, Pa. His well began producing about 40 barrels of oil a day from almost 69.5 feet.

This view is of a replica of the Drake's original well, the first drilled in America. By 2005, Pennsylvania’s total oil production was 1,761,772 barrels and its total natural gas production was 176,438,370 Mcf.
