Blennerhassett Island, now a state park, is located in a stretch of the Ohio River between Parkersburg, West Virginia suburbs and Belpre, Ohio. The island was purchased in the late 1790's by a wealthy Irish nobleman, name of Harmon Blennerhasset and his wife, Margaret. They named their island "Isle de Beu Pre," where they built a palayial mansion. After being accused of a treason plot with Aaron Burr, the couple fled their island in 1806. After being acquitted, Blennerhasset returned to find their
mansion had been seized by creditors and thoroughly plundered by vandals and drunken militia who had raided his wine cellar. Almost bankrupt, they retreated to England to live with relatives until his death from the last of several strokes in 1831. West Virginia State Parks reconstructed a replica of the mansion on its original site.
